Vampire Lecture, 2005~2007 performance, duration various.

This is one project which i always had problem explaining or describing to people. Its not that complicated, really. I requires me to be in a vampire costume, show black and white slides on a projector, and talk in front of an audience.

For a while i was obsessed with the idea of using a vampire character to talk about Photography. The project started when I realized that vampire, like the medium of photography, is sensitive to light. From this analogy, I've developed couple of different ways to talk about representation, identity, and artist' ambition/morality through story telling, silly jokes, and bad acting. The whole thing is not unlike standup comedy.

For the sake of staying true to the idea of vampire, none of the 8 performances were ever documented. I have asked a few people to describe what they saw after the performances:

"horrorful and full-blooded performances. Master of poetic and deceptive atmosphere, like a chocolate that tastes like meatballs..."

"Because I know Mike Chang for couple years now, I know how he is...the vampire lecture is a reflection of his super sensitive heart...ok i might be bullshitting here. hahaa but that was all I was thinking while watching the vampire / Mike."
~noako okamoto

“I can't stop thinking about vampires. H.J. resurrects a dead subject...I am more interested in werewolves but I guess it was good.“
~justin little

"I remember to mark my calendar for the vampire lectures of Mike HJ Chang. His presentation of black and white slides gives a good peak into the life of a vampire. He shows images of his travels and habitat, speaking through fangs on the high dramas of being a great artist. This character does not lack confidence in his talent and it's refreshing.
I like to watch Mike lecture as a vampire because it is entertaining, it elicits thought and, it makes me excited about the possibilities in art again. He reminds me of how nice it is when drama sits in the lap of humor."

"I took a photo during the lecture, but instead of the lecturer, there was just a orb."
